Kiumars Poorahmad

Born in 1949, Kiumars Poorahmad graduated in directing. He started his career as a film critic and made his entrance in the cinema scene as an assistant director in a TV series titled “Fire without smoke”. Since then, he has made a name for himself as a screenwriter, director and producer, adding some 17 feature films as well as several TV series and short films to his professional profile. However, it was “The stories of Majid” that brought him national recognition. Poorahmad received the Crystal Simorgh of best director for the “Strange Sisters” at the 14th Fajr International Film Festival. The film was the best selling movie of the year 1996, bringing back 1.41 billion Rls. at the box office. Poorahmad is mostly recognized as a director of films about young adults, and has won many awards from Fajr and Children & Young Adults film festivals, as well as the annual Iran Cinema Celebration.  

Kioomars Poorahmad is one of the most active directors of movies for children and young adults. In his works, Poorahmad never confines himself to one particular genre or style. He has tried his outlook in many different areas, an outlook that is rooted in the innocence and simplicity of childhood, even when dealing with grim concepts such as war. Poorahmad has made many feature films as well as several successful TV series. Each one of his children’s or detective TV series is an excellent example in its own genre, which is no small feat. He has his own independent style and does not imitate any other filmmaker. At any rate, it can’t be denied that what he has done demonstrates the amazing capacity of cinema for embracing diverse cultures and identities.
