Rakhshan Bani Etemad (1954)
A graduate in Film Directing at ex – faculty of Dramatic Arts (now Faculty of Cinema and Theatre). Started a career as TV Scripting, in 1973. Until 1980, she made some short docus. In 1981, as a continuity girl, she started her cinematic career. Since now, she has directed 12 feature films and many documentaries. Her work has been screened in many Film Festivals, or Cultural Centers, all around the world. Winner of awards from Fajr Film Festival, The Grand Feast of Iranian Cinema, And festivals of Moscow, Karlovy Vary, Locarno and The Festival Of Canary Islands, in Spain.
One of the best women filmmakers of Iranian cinema, whose films always deals with social issues. While contemplating on Iranian Women’s difficulties and challenges, she do succeed to depict them. In None of her pictures, she has condemned men. She believes that, “Women are facing many difficulties, in the society. But they are not poor and weak creatures, nor legends holding sword in their hand.” She portrays anonymous women, in her pictures, and looks at social issues and the changing in the society, radically and basically.
