Majid Majidi
Born in 1959, Majid Majidi received his Bachelors degree from the Institute of Dramatic Arts in Tehran. In 1980, he started his career in cinema by directing several shorts and acting in a number of feature films. Today, he has 7 feature films and several shorts and documentaries in his professional profile. His films are some of the finest works of the Asian cinema, attracting the attention of many cultural and popular circles around the globe. He is the only Iranian director who has been nominated for an academy award. He is also a two time winner of the Best Film award at the Montreal World Film Festival, an unprecedented event in the history of this festival.
As a realistic filmmaker, he believes morality and spirituality to be the lost values of our time, regardless of geographical boundaries. Storytelling is a common feature of all his films. He speaks with the audience through images and communicates his message with arresting gestures. The filmmaker in Majidi understands the common language of the people of the world. His social statements have always been very direct and very challenging. Majidi’s films have been very well received and liked especially in Asia, and are looked up to as excellent examples of cinema by other filmmakers.
